Rottweilers
are perhaps the strongest and most powerful
dogs in the world for their size. They
are intelligent, hardy and make wonderful
companions. Most people are surprised
by the affectionate displays of the
breed. Rottweilers are calm and self-assured,
never nervous or excitable unless they
have been handled improperly. They are
thought to have been developed from
crossbreeding Roman dogs with local
German sheepdogs, and early on they
were used to herd cattle. Rottweilers
usually stand 23 to 27 inches high and
weigh 90 to 110 pounds.
One of the most muscular and powerful
dogs for its size, Rottweilers reflect
a tranquil temperament. Popular as far
back as the Roman Empire and later used
by Germany to hunt wild boar, Rottweilers
worked as cattle dogs until European
cattle drives came to an end with the
rise of the railroad. Their intelligence
and sociability make them one of the
most popular dogs in the United States.
They are also highly valued as guard
dogs and police dogs.
The outercoat is straight, coarse and
dense. Rottweilers are always black
with markings that range from rust to
mahogany.
The tail is docked short. It follows
the topline and is carried a little
above horizontal.
The head is of medium length and broad
between the ears. The eyes are dark
brown and almond in shape with a noble,
alert expression. The ears are triangular
and hang forward. The Rottweiler’s neck
is powerful, muscular and of medium
length with no loose skin.
The forelegs are strongly developed
with straight, heavy bones. The hind
legs have long, very broad thighs. The
feet are compact with thick, hard pads
and well-arched toes and short, strong
nails. The rear feet are somewhat longer
than the front feet.
